As a control procedure to mitigate the epidemic, we propose an adaptive rewiring mechanism for temporary isolation of infected nodes upon their detection. As a case study, we investigate the network of pig trade in Germany. Based on extensive numerical simulations for a wide range of parameters, we demonstrate that the adaptation mechanism leads to a significant extension of the parameter range, for which most of the index nodes (origins of the epidemic) lead to vanishing epidemics. Furthermore the performance of adaptation is very heterogeneous with respect to the index node. We quantify the success of the proposed adaptation scheme in dependence on the infectious period and detection times. To support our findings we propose a mean-field analytical description of the problem.

Consensus formation on adaptive networks.
The structure of a network can significantly influence the properties of the dynamical processes that take place on them. While many studies have been paid to this influence, much less attention has been devoted to the interplay and feedback mechanisms between dynamical processes and network topology on adaptive networks. Adaptive rewiring of links can happen in real life systems such as acquai...
متن کاملContagion on Networks with Self-Organised Community Structure
Living systems are organised in space. This imposes constraints on both their structural form and, consequently, their dynamics. While artificial life research has demonstrated that embedding an adaptive system in space tends to have a significant impact on its behaviour, we do not yet have a full account of the relevance of spatiality to living self-organisation. Here, we extend the REDS model...
متن کاملCreating and controlling overlap in two-layer networks. Application to a mean-field SIS epidemic model with awareness dissemination
We study the properties of the potential overlap between two networks A,B sharing the same set of N nodes (a two-layer network) whose respective degree distributions pA(k), pB(k) are given. Defining the overlap coefficient α as the Jaccard index, we derive upper bounds for the minimum and maximum overlap coefficient in terms of pA(k), pB(k) and N . We also present an algorithm based on cross-re...
متن کاملControlling Nonlinear Processes, using Laguerre Functions Based Adaptive Model Predictive Control (AMPC) Algorithm
Laguerre function has many advantages such as good approximation capability for different systems, low computational complexity and the facility of on-line parameter identification. Therefore, it is widely adopted for complex industrial process control. In this work, Laguerre function based adaptive model predictive control algorithm (AMPC) was implemented to control continuous stirred tank rea...
متن کاملNetwork reorganization driven by temporal interdependence of its elements.
We employ an adaptive parameter control technique based on detection of phase/lag synchrony between the elements of the system to dynamically modify the structure of a network of nonidentical, coupled Rossler oscillators. Two processes are simulated: adaptation, under which the initially different properties of the units converge, and rewiring, in which clusters of interconnected elements are f...
